This project was created during the fall semester of my master of Architecture program at Prat Institute in 2015. This building is mixed-use residential which follows a layering of programmatic systems. The ground floor is a retail and light industrial typology with pedestrian streets to allow the users to interact with the intimate spaces. The second level is formal office space which can interact with the pedestrian streets below or the residential above. The third level and above are residential floors. The layering of systems allows an integration of movement and creates a city within a city. All elements were created parametrically based on two original apartment units, and follows the main datum of the first floor below. Sun patterns are capitalized on by the orientation of massing, sun shading system, and implementation of light wells.
Software interoperability helped create an efficient workflow for this project. Massing was done in Rhino with Grasshopper, then brought into Revit for a more detailed model and drawings. The Revit model was exported into Maya to create the final animation and humans were animated to move throughout the building to give scale. The final animation and boards were post processed in Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects. Still renderings were created in Rhino with Vray, and the animation was rendered with Mental Ray in Maya.
